Magomed Ankalaev faced off against Thiago Santos in the light heavyweight title fight, this past Saturday in Las Vegas for UFC Fight Night.

Results

Ankalaev extended his winning streak from seven to eight with the win over Santos. He won via unanimous decision. The scores were 49-46, 49-46, 48-47.

The Russian is now 17-1 for his career.

Breakdown

In the first 90 seconds of the first round, there wasn’t a ton of action. Ankalaev made the first move by landing a couple of rear right hands.

Round two was off to a busier start. However, Santos wasn’t landing many significant strikes while Ankalaev was. In the last 30 seconds of that round, Santos might have gotten a win from the judges with a left hand over the top.

That possibly brought them both back to even on the scorecards. Third round was pretty evenly matched as well. In the fourth, Santos came out swinging. He had brief success in the opening minute. But in the final minute, the Russian was able to push Santos back to the fence and get his first takedown.

In the fifth, there was still precious little significant action, but Ankalaev secured his win on the scorecards with his grappling work against the fence as he kept Santos from making a late surge.

UFC Fight Nights are slightly smaller than the numbered UFC cards, but the one this weekend is a fun one. The APEX facility in Las Vegas, we have a light heavyweight headliner fight between Thiago Santos and Magomed Ankalaev. Here’s a fight preview.

Previous Record

Santos comes into this match after a huge win over Johnny Walker last October. That one ended a 3 fight losing streak. Although it’s a good confidence booster, let’s not forgot that was a different weight division. Facing a 205 lb is going to be slightly different. Not to mention Santos turned 38 last January and has already had double knee surgery.

Ankalaev had a good seven fight streak with four knockout finishes in the last few years. At just 29, he’s probably got a little more steam in his engine. He’s never been 5 rounds in his career though, so we don’t know how well he is going to be able to pace himself.

Predictions

I think most people are thinking Ankalaev is going to walk away with the win not only because he has the better record going in, but is also all around a bit “fresher”. It’s a pretty safe prediction. But there’s a few of us out here that still want to root for the aging vet.

UFC 272 Covington vs Masvidal Results https://admin.athomedaily.com/sports/ufc-272-covington-vs-masvidal-results https://admin.athomedaily.com/sports/ufc-272-covington-vs-masvidal-results#respond Mon, 07 Mar 2022 12:00:00 +0000 https://admin.athomedaily.com/?p=4847 These two former friends and training partners threw done this weekend in the Octagon. Here's a match summary.

The post UFC 272 Covington vs Masvidal Results appeared first on At Home Daily.

]]>
We had a star-studded and action-packed night at UFC 272 in Las Vegas over the weekend. Not only did we start off with a worthy co-main event, but we witnessed the first fight between Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal. These former friends, roommates, and training partners are now bitter rivals. Read below for the results.

Recap

In case you missed, we wrote a preview article for the grudge match that you can find here. If you don’t want to go back and read it, no worries. I’ll give a brief recap of the history between these two right here.

Covington was a college wrestler that turned pro immediately after graduating. He moved from Oregon to Florida and joined the famed ATT gym, where Miami native, Masvidal, was already training.

The two hit it off right away. Covington had a lot to learn from Masvidal about striking, and Masvidal had a lot to learn from Covington about wrestling. The two helped each other out and strengthened each other’s game.

Off the mats, they spent a lot of time together, sharing many hobbies and eventually an apartment. However, as they both rose to fame, the arrogance and the tension grew between them. Covington’s fiery personality made them butt heads and things turned sour.

UFC 272

That brings us to today. Over the past year or so, the two have been spewing insults at each other. Fabricated? Probably. But these fighters know what gets them the big fights, and they both landed themselves a pay per view deal thanks to Dana (White).

Let’s just start off by giving a brief nod of honor to the co-main event between countrymen Rontao Moicano and Alejandro dos Anjos. These two entered a total 5-round slugfest with blood spraying all over the mats.

At one point, Moicano got elbowed so bad in the face that he had a cut open up above his left eye, which was already swollen enough that the medic wasn’t willing to let him continue fighting. The ref allowed Moicano 30 more seconds to turn the match around, otherwise he would stop the fight.

Moicano showed what he was made of and landed some good rear hands on dos Anjos to draw some blood back. The victory eventually went to Dos Anjos via split decision but it was an entertaining match up.

Ok, now on to the main event. Weigh-ins were a little bit more charged than the actual fight. Don’t get me wrong, it was a decent fight. But not quite as full of the daunting, heckling, and teasing you would see based on the past year.

Covington vs Masvidal
Covington vs Masvidal

When the match began, they (obviously) didn’t touch gloves. Covington made sure to come out sprinting to get to Masvidal before he could get to the center of the Octagon. This is because Masvidal is the better striker–this is where he would be most comfortable and in charge. Covington needed to back Masvidal up to the fence for the take down, since he is the best wrestler.

And that he did. Covington stayed in control for most of the match. Most take downs resulted in a rear naked choke attempt, but Masvidal is good enough to not let him get the submission and wrestle his way out, but had no successful take downs of his own.

Masvidal did land some good strikes and had Covington off balance for a couple of rounds, but it wasn’t enough. The win went to Covington via unanimous decision. In his post-match conference, Covington said he just took out the Miami trash, and now he’s ready to take out the Louisiana swamp trash.

In case you don’t know who he is, that’s code for Dustin Poirier. Poirier took out McGregor in their last trilogy fight (you know, the one where McGregor totally snapped his leg). Poirier currently sits at #2 in the UFC Lightweight rankings, behind Denver-based Justin Gaethje, and belt-holder Charles Oliveira.

Grudge match alert! These former friends are going to be facing off as foes in the highly-anticipated title fight this Saturday at UFC 272 in Las Vegas.

The Backstory

Former training partners, former teammates, former roommates, and former friends. What went wrong?

When they first met in 2011 at ATT in Florida, Covington was a fresh wrestler from Oregon and Masvidal has already been training MMA for quite some time. Covington, who is well known for his outbursts and contentious personality, did not make himself well-liked at his new gym.

But for whatever reason, Masvidal took a liking to him. The two quickly started bonding and doing everything together, including playing poker at the local casino. At some point, Masvidal invited Covington to live with him in his apartment.

But things escalated because of Covington’s character, and a financial dispute between Covington and one of Masvidal’s coaches. We’ve seen them publicly trade spats and insults at each other over the last few years.

Media Day
Media Day

Since they grew apart, they each have grown more successful in their respective fighting careers. Ultimately in 2020, the head coach at ATT instituted a rule that no members could trash talk each other anymore. Masvidal immediately broke that rule. So the head coach put his foot down.

He sent a group text: “I liked you guys a hell of a lot better when you were broke and cared about the team instead of just yourselves,” Lambert said he wrote. “Neither one of you can come back to the gym. I hope you end up fighting each other and beating the living s— out of each other.”

Fight Preview

Covington enters the match with an 11-3 record and Masvidal at 12-8. Covington is the better wrestler while Masvidal is the better striker. But both have fallen short in trying to grab the welterweight title from Kamaru Usman. So honestly the match is about who can prove they are the better contender?

It will be an exciting one, not only because of the rivalry, but because they haven’t fought before. It will set the tone for who’s going to walk away owning the media, and most likely set up a trilogy match up.

  • 1. Norway – 26 (12 gold, 7 silver, 7 bronze)
  • 2. China – 20 (4 gold, 7 silver, 9 bronze)

Team USA

Team USA came to Beijing with the second most Winter Olympic medals at a total count of 305. We’re not far behind in third place, but still a few to go to beat Norway. We have a total of 8 gold medals, 7 silver, and 4 bronzes.

USA recently got gold and silver in the men’s freeski slopestyle, thanks to Alexander Hall and Nick Goepper. Jaelin Kauf won silver in women’s moguls, and Ryan Cochran-Siegle snagged silver as well, for the men’s Super-G. Three-man team of Ashley Caldwell, Chris Lillis and Justin Schoenefeld edged out China for the gold in aerial freestyle skiing.

For snowboarding, Lindsey Jacobellis got gold in women’s snowboard cross while Julia Marino got bronze. Fan-favorite Chloe Kim made women’s halfpipe history with her gold win, blowing the competition away.

In figure skating, Madison Chock and Evan Bates added silver after their pairs performance. Another fan-favorite, Nathan Chen earned gold in men’s singles figure skating, with a 22.55 point gap between himself and silver.

There were a couple of first-time medals for team USA as well. Mixed teams aerial event took the first-ever Olympic gold medal, as well as mixed team snowboard cross with an Olympics debut. The first bronze medal for women’s individual sprint in cross-country skiing went to Jessie Diggins.

UFC 271 Main Card Results https://admin.athomedaily.com/sports/ufc-271-main-card-results https://admin.athomedaily.com/sports/ufc-271-main-card-results#respond Mon, 14 Feb 2022 15:13:56 +0000 https://admin.athomedaily.com/?p=4612 Here are the main card results from UFC 271 over the weekend in Houston, Texas.

The post UFC 271 Main Card Results appeared first on At Home Daily.

]]>
The main card at UFC 271 this last Saturday in Houston, Texas was packed with some pretty good fights. Here’s how things went down.

Israel Adesanya d. Robert Whittaker

For the headline fight, we saw a second match up between belt holder (Izzy) Adesanya and belt contender, Whittaker. The last time these two met was in 2019. Whittaker stated to the press he knew he had his work cut out for him in order to regain the title.

In the first round, Izzy came out hot, throwing lots of strikes and knocking Whittaker down. But Whittaker was able to get it together for the second round and stand his ground, getting a takedown. In the next few rounds, Whittaker would attempt more takedowns since he’s a better wrestler, but to no avail.

Izzy was able to keep him at a pretty good distance thanks to his long reach, while still mixing in quick kicks and straight punches. Clearly it was enough to let the judges vote in favor for a unanimous decision win for the title.

I’m sure we’ll see another match up here within the next year or so.

Tai Tuivasa d. Derrick Lewis

This heavyweight bout I expected to go either way, to be honest. Lewis is one scary dude but Tuivasa really solidified himself not only with a four streak win, but also by winning via KO.

We saw the two clinch for most of the fight. And in the third round during a clinch against the fence, Tuivasa threw an elbow upstairs that knocked Lewis out.

Other Results

Jared Cannonier d. Derek Brunson

Renato Moicano d. Alexander Hernandez

Bobby Green d. Nasrat Haqparast

Honorable Mention: Casey O’Neill d. Roxanne Modafferi

The young gun 24-year-old King Casey took out the 39-year-old veteran, Roxanne Modafferi via unanimous decision, with one judge voting 29-28 in favor of Modafferi. This was one of the more exciting matches of the night with over strikes being thrown total.

O’Neill alone broke the record for most significant strikes thrown in a women’s flyweight fight. With Modafferi being an expert in jiu jitsu, it’s surprising that she didn’t attempt more take downs. O’Neill looked on point, slipping and countering most of Modafferi’s straight punches.

The crowd was largely in favor of Modafferi, who retired after the match. To the point of booing O’Neill during her post-fight interview.

Today Saturday February 12th, we have a couple of big fights under UFC card 271. The fights are scheduled to take place at the Houston Toyota Center, starting at Here’s a preview of the main card fights lined up.

Israel Adesanya (c) vs. Robert Whittaker

Adesanya
Adesanya

Belt-holder Adesanya first met Whittaker back in 2019. Whittaker couldn’t handle the “Style Bender”‘s super technical and dynamic striking. Whittaker essentially suffered two knock outs in that fight, but he was saved by the bell in the first round. The second one put him to sleep.

Robert Whittaker
Robert Whittaker

Whittaker’s been working hard though. He’s beaten some tough opponents over the past couple of years that have earned him this rematch. Will it be enough to overturn the current title holder and win the Middleweight belt? Odds are still in Adesanya’s favor.

Derrick Lewis vs. Tai Tuivasa

In the night’s heavyweight bout, Lewis and Tuivasa face off. These two contenders have a combined total of 33 knockouts. Lewis is arguably one of the most formidable heavy-hitters in this category, but Tuivasa is coming off a four-fight winning streak.

Will Tuivasa get to do his well-known, post-victory routine where he chugs beer out of a shoe?

Tuivasa Shoey
Tuivasa Shoey

Jared Cannonier vs. Derek Brunson

In another Middleweight fight, Brunson is looking to extend his winning streak to six. He’s only had 7 total career losses, most of which came at the hands of championship holders.

Cannonier on the other hand actually started in the UFC as a heavyweight before dropping a couple of weight classes. It proved to be a wise career move so far, with his only loss at the hands of Whittaker.

Odds are on Brunson on this one.

Kyler Phillips vs. Marcelo Rojo

In our Bantamweight fight, we have to fighters both coming off recent losses so this one is pretty up in the air.

Phillips is our shiny, young prospect who seems to be pretty well-rounded with training in both karate, wrestling, and jiu-jitsu. Rojo is also only about 1-year new to the UFC. He’s a better striker than he is a wrestler, so I’m expecting Phillips to try and take him to the ground.

Bobby Green vs. Nasrat Haqparast

Last but not least is our Lightweight bout to kick off the main card at the start of the night. This one is an interesting match up. Both guys have had tough up-and-down journeys over the past few years and are both in need of a win.

Betting sites have Green has the likely win but I think this one is up for grabs.

Preliminary:

Also fighting on the card:

Heavyweight: Andrei Arlovski vs. Jared Vanderaa

Women’s: Flyweight Roxanne Modafferi vs. Casey O’Neill

Flyweight: Alex Perez vs. Matt Schnell

Light Heavyweight: William Knight vs. Maxim Grishin

Early Preliminary:

Bantamweight Leomana Martinez vs. Ronnie Lawrence

Lightweight Alexander Hernandez vs. Renato Moicano

Light Heavyweight Carlos Ulberg vs. Fabio Cherant

Middleweight A.J. Dobson vs. Jacob Malkoun

Bantamweight Douglas Silva de Andrade vs. Sergey Morozov

Welterweight Jeremiah Wells vs. Mike Mathetha

We’ve officially wrapped up all the matches from down under in Melbourne. And boy did we get some great, thrilling finals this past weekend for the championship. Here are the 2022 Australian Open results from the singles action.

Men’s Singles

On the men’s side, the people’s champ Rafael Nadal came back from two sets down to defeat Daniill Medvedev 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4, 6-4, 7-5. It’s being called one of Nadal’s greatest, and most sweetest, Grand Slam victories. Nadal also considers it to be one of his greatest comebacks.

The match took five hours and 24 minutes, which is the second longest Grand Slam championship in history. Nadal now holds 21 different Grand Slam titles, including two from Melbourne. This means he holds at least two titles from each of the four Grand Slams.

I think we can all agree it was the most unexpected victory. Over the recent years, with Nadal being such a physical player, we haven’t seen him at his strongest. He’s been plagued by various injuries, the most recent of which was on his foot (last year). Nadal was himself uncertain about his aptitude coming into the 2022 season.

Asked if this was his greatest victory, Nadal nodded. “The most unexpected, without a doubt,” he said, smiling. “And most surprising I think for everyone. For you guys, too. For me personally, especially, no? Because I know how I arrived here. I don’t know. Have been a very emotional night. Even now I am destroyed, honestly, physically. I can’t think much, I can’t remember a lot of moments of the match.”

What else does this mean? As an avid Rafa from the start (I’m talking when Nadal was about 19 and muscled his way onto the ATP circuit with a standout performance at the Miami Masters), I’m excited to say that Rafa has claimed back the GOAT title. With his most recent win down under, Nadal now holds a total of 21 Grand Slam titles, enough to surpass both Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.

If Djkovic hadn’t been deported from the country last week due to a revoked visa over COVID concerns, I’m not sure we would have had the same result here.

It was definitely a slug-fest of a match, with momentum being traded frequently, game points being saved and/or converted, and long-winded rallies. It’s just the type of match that best suits Nadal’s style and it’s great to see him play that way even after all these years.

Women’s Singles

On the ladies’ side, Australian fans were in for a treat as local Ashleigh Barty took home the women’s championship. Honestly, it’s been a while since Australia has produced a real, viable champion on either the men’s or women’s side.

Especially since the days of old when you look back on the early era of Margaret Court, Ken Rosewall, and Rod Laver. In the 1990s and earlier 2000’s, we were able to see Patrick Rafter and Lleyton Hewitt rise to the top of the rankings, but fell short in bringing home the championship on their home court.

But Barty is here to save the day. Barty’s win ended a 44-year drought of a homegrown singles champion at the Australian Open.

She joins the elite group of tennis players that have been able to win a Grand Slam on all three surfaces (hard, clay, and grass). This group of players is less prevalent on the men’s side, but on the women’s, the only other player to boast this feat (that is still an active professional), is Serena Williams.

And unlike Nadal, Barty barely struggled on her road to the championship title. She only dropped three service games, and not a single set for the entire two weeks.

“As an Aussie, the most important part of this tournament is being able to share it with so many people,” Barty said in her victory speech. “You guys today in the crowd have been nothing shy of exceptional. This crowd is one of the most fun I’ve ever played in front of and you guys brought me so much joy out here today.”
